5 Reasons to Get Outside, Be Healthy and Stay Active

People can argue all they want about how fantastic technology is, and how wonderful it is to have the internet at your fingertips 27/7, but this convenience is also costing us, and I am not referring to money either. Most people who live in developed countries have entered into a phase where they very rarely spend time outdoors.

Twenty years ago people used to spend far more time outside than they do now, and no matter how we try to justify this sort of lifestyle, it simply isn’t good for us. Children are particularly vulnerable because their bodies and their brains are still developing.

Kids should be playing outside in the sun and the dirt; they should be climbing trees, playing on swingsets, jumping on trampolines, or indulging in any other activity that encourages optimal growth and development. Here are 5 good reasons why you and your kids should spend more time out in the open air:

1. Natural Light Is Good for Your Eyes

In Beijing, it is common practice for youngsters to stay indoors studying all day, every day. Beijing is a city where academic culture rules and children are starting to pay the price for this. According to one study, levels of myopia amongst 11 to 12-year olds in Beijing have risen by a whopping 80%.

Studies done elsewhere in the world have also established that kids who regularly spend time outdoors have a lower risk of developing eye problems later in life when compared to children who almost never play outdoors.

2. Spending Time Outdoors Increases Energy Levels

Have you ever gone for a short jog and noticed just how energetic you felt afterward? Sure, if you go and run for miles you are going to get tired, but short periods of exercise have the exact opposite effect. Trampolines usually cause you to use almost every muscle in your body, but you would be amazed at how energetic you would feel after jumping on a trampoline for a few minutes. You can do just about any type of outdoor activity, and the chances are it will leave you feeling totally revitalized.

3. Playing Outdoors Encourages Muscle Development

Even if you only go for regular walks, that time that you spend outdoors will be time well spent because you will be helping to tone some of your muscles. If you have young kids, you really should make an effort to encourage them to play outside in the garden because their vast amount of energy keeps them going for ages, and these long periods of outdoor activity can only do them the world of good.

Swingsets and trampolines are especially good for kids, although very young children should never be allowed to jump freely on a trampoline, while slightly older kids should only be allowed to use a trampoline under adult supervision.

4. Spending Time Outdoors Helps You to Relax

I don’t think much needs to be said about the link between relaxation and outdoor life because most people have already experienced this over and over again. What could be more relaxing than lying back in the shade next to the ocean, listening to the sound of the surf? Or, just imagine being in a lush green setting, sitting next to a stream, listening to the hypnotic sound of the water as it makes its way downhill. Now compare that to how you would feel if you were sitting in front of your computer instead.

5. Sunlight Gives You Vitamin D

If you do even a small amount of online research about vitamin D, you will soon discover just how important this particular vitamin really is. You will also discover the sad truth about how widespread vitamin D deficiency is. In fact, there is a very strong possibility that even you are vitamin D deficient.

Fortunately for all of us, we can all get as much vitamin D as we want, and we don’t even have to pay anything for it. Just by spending a little bit of time in the sun on a regular basis, you’ll have an optimal amount of vitamin D in your body because your body will produce all the vitamin D it needs.

So, there you have five excellent reasons to spend more time outdoors enjoy the beauty and splendour of Mother Nature
